School ReadinessSarah teaches Parent Literacy Clinic

Studies show that some children have an advantage over other children when they arrive at school for the first time. The more a child is exposed to reading even from infancy, the better prepared he will be for school. Even reading for just twenty minutes per week  can make a difference in a child's life.

ReadFresno conducts Parent Literacy Clinics in low-performing schools in Fresno, California. The clinic  introduces parents to the services of the County Library and gives them some basic information about the importance of reading with their children.

To help children be prepared for reading, there are six skills they need to learn called the "Six Pillars of Reading Readiness."

Six Pillars to Reading Readiness

  1. Print Motivation - an interest in books
  2. Vocabulary - recognizing words and knowing the names of things
  3. Print Awareness - how to handle a book and following the words on agirl reading with adult woman page
  4. Letter Knowledge - knowing that each letter is different, knowing the name and the sound of each letter
  5. Phonological Awareness - being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words
  6. Narrative Skills - being able to tell a story or being able describe things and events
